Tat’s Deli. Seattle, WA

Tat’s Deli has moved and they are now in a 50 seat location on Yesler in Pioneer Square…..so said the e-mail and I said, “DELI TIME!!!!”.    I made the detour from my regular trip to class yesterday to Pioneer Square to visit the newly located Tat’s Deli.

The big board had a lot of choices but was I going to pass on a chance at eating a Philly Cheesesteak with WHIZ!!!!!?!?!?!??!!? No.  Add grilled onions and you’re my new hero……Oh geez, thanks!!!

The deli flows smooth and quickly. I counted a line of about 30 people and they turned it over in about 10 minutes, pretty damn fast.  I was lucky enough to arrive before those 30 people so I had a chance to sit down and watch a little World Cup action on their nice televisions……sitting down and eating is pretty cool….forgot about that for a little while.

The interior part of Pioneer Square now has two great deli’s! This is exciting and I am renaming Pioneer Square…..it shall be called Deli Square!!!!!

Tat’s, go there now, amazing. (click)

Delicatus (Seattle, WA)

My search for great deli’s in Seattle continues. So far I have been to a few that I will recap when I finish my list but it has been a great journey so far.  In between the time of making my list and running around Seattle with school, working, and doing this blog thing a new deli has opened up in the heart of Pioneer Square.  I have been waiting to go for a few weeks now and I finally had the chance yesterday after taking a little walking detour from the water taxi terminal to Pioneer Square in search of DELICATUS!

It was easy to find, they have a nice sign and large windows showing their deli counter so you can see the amazing meat cases even after they are closed….good move!

What I wasn’t expecting was the amount of choices I had for sandwiches….it was quite startling and exciting….this means…..I….will….have to…..come….back (A little William Shatner impression).

I wish they would erase the Mariners record from the bottom of the board because I started to feel a little sick after that. It’s the beginning of the season and it’s already over!  Chone Figgins isn’t hitting, Milton has lived up to his mental expectations, Felix is pitching like he has a new contract, Jose Lopez is still on the team and playing 3rd!!!!!! WTF!!!!, Griffey needed to retire years ago, the bullpen is a mess, f’ing Bedard,  how is Mike Sweeney on this team still?!?!?!, Cliff Lee is too good for this team, Ichiro is just Ichiro, and Gutierrez rules them all.  I smell a fire sale coming soon.  Oh….sorry…I’ll get back on track.   Console myself with the Mountain Sandwich……here ya go little buddy.

Corned Beef, Pastrami, Slaw, Russian Dressing, all on some rye bread….delicious!  I’ll be back for the Pavo Diablo, Fists of Fury, and the Fire of 1889 but please stop reminding me how bad the M’s are…….Ok fine, I’ll just eat my sorrows away.

Beecher’s Handmade Cheese: Seattle, WA

IMG_2088

Had an hour to kill before my next class so I quickly walked over to Beecher’s Handmade Cheese. This is not my first and it won’t be my last encounter with Beecher’s. You may remember me talking about Maximus/Minimus/Awesomus (click) a few months ago……well, Beecher’s owns that little truck of awesomus.  The next time you visit the little truck and wonder, “Damn, this cheese is good where can I buy it from?”. Now you know!

I love the layout of the store. You can see where your cheese is being made.

IMG_2792

If there is a worthwhile/fantastic/tasty/favorite cheese of yours then they probably have it. If they don’t then you should just try theirs and it will be your new favorite.  I’m sorry for the ass kissing on this one but it’s true.

IMG_2793

Beyond the ability to just buy cheese they will also serve up some food for you which I strongly recommend. Their food is so good that it takes amazing pictures by itself. The sandwich hit the self-timer and produced this amazing photo of itself………..true story.

The Swinery: West Seattle, WA

Swinery

Oh is it ever!

Chef Gabriel Claycamp is back!!! I posted an announcement about Chef Claycamp’s closing of his Culinary Communion back in March (click). His press release stated a new business called The Swinery which would have cured meats, meats, and more meats. I have been waiting for this day for a long time!

I was reading the West Seattle Blog on Twitter and they said the opening was postponed until today which was great for me because yesterday I had a final at school that I had to take…..Culinary Concepts and Theories, just in case you’re curious.  Anyway, back to the meat!

I drove over to their store after my visit to A&J meats and I found a cute little red store that was invited me to step inside and buy some meat products.

IMG_2345

I walked in and there and I was amazed to find old school cuts of meat as well as things you wouldn’t find at a typical deli/butcher.  Lard, homemade bacon, glace de viande, and more.  Chef Claycamp even told me if there was any particular cut I needed/wanted that he would get it for me since they break down the animals whole. That’s great news for me because I want to make some stocks and he will be able to supply the bones that I need in order to make that happen.  Gizzards? Yes! Odds and ends and pieces? Yes.  Just give them a heads up a day or two ahead through e-mail or call and they will give you any piece of meat to order!!!

FANF*%@KINGTASTIC!

Take a number and get ready to eat some meat!

Chef told us about a A&J Meats in class a few weeks ago and I have been waiting to go ever since she told us a little bit about them. She told us they had pretty much any type or cut of meat we could ever find/need/want/dream about. As always, Chef was correct!

I made my voyage over to Queen Anne in Seattle. Queen Anne is an area that I’m not too familiar with but once I drove into the area I fell in love. I felt like I stepped back in time. I felt like I was back in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Little ma and pa shops along with a few new chic stores to remind me I am in the present.

A&J is what I made my trip over there for so first come first served! I walked in and I was amazed with the selection of meat. I’ve never seen this selection of meats in one place before and I think a lot of it has to do with A&J’s refusal to be a trend setter. I asked one of the people there if they had a website so I could link back to them about this post and they said they just bought a fax machine a few weeks ago……..I guess I won’t be following them on Twitter anytime soon and I think that is brilliant.  Why do they need to let everyone know what they’re doing when you already know what they’re doing is awesome work with meat!!!! I’m here to change that, give them a little blog lovin’ if you will.

I took a little video of their meat section. By the way, they also have a seafood section and a wine section….the holy grail, it is real!

Like I said, they pretty much have everything. They even have oven ready entrees like pot pies, cordon bleu, chicken pastries, stuffed green peppers, beef wellington, and more!!! I would list all of their ready to cook food but I think you should go check them out for yourself!

Oh yes, they get the EricRiveraCooksDeliOfApproval:

De Laurenti’s Food Market

IMG_2106

I’m getting on a roll with my Thursday afternoon walks around Seattle.  The bad thing is that the quarter is almost over and this was my last walk Thursday walk. Next quarter I have class all day Monday so don’t worry you will still have the opportunity to see more food stuff!

De Laurenti’s is an Italian food market in Pike Place Market that has just about every specialty Italian food item available (If they don’t have it then they can special order it for you).  I stopped by to pick up some prosciutto ends so I could experiment with a few flavors before I buy the nice stuff from them. This is the great thing about De Laurenti’s, they have just about every cut of Italian meat available and with different varieties and grades you are able to shop your price point.

IMG_2108

They also have a great selection of oils!!!!

IMG_2110

AND CHEESE!!!!

So if you want to create a real deal Italian meal then get yourself down to De Laurenti’s! I’ll be back for some cheese and a sandwich!

I Love New York Deli: The little deli that packs a big punch!

IMG_2094

It’s not the size of your deli that counts, it’s the quality of your pastrami. I am on a quest to find every deli in Seattle. The only prerequesite is that they slice their meat to order, none of that pre-sliced sitting in a plastic container garbage. For me, eating freshly sliced meat is like opening Christmas presents or like finding a parking spot in Seattle…….it’s exciting.

I had a little time in between classes today so I started my walk from school to Pike Place Market; it’s about a quarter mile from my school. Located right around the corner, inside of the market, from the airbone fish is the little deli stand that can……make a damn fine sandwich!

The first thing you should do when you go somewhere is check out the menu. I Love New York’s menu is pretty robust for being such a tiny place but don’t be fooled by it’s size………..there are freshly sliced meats here!!

I opted for the Hot Pastrami with a little coleslaw:

IMG_2103

This place definitely gets my seal approval. Fantastic meat that is sliced to order and I have proof!!!

Anyway, if you’re in Seattle, especially Pike Place Market (you’ll end up there for sure ya damn tourist) then visit I Love New York Deli. Meat, served to order!
